Tutankhamun's mask

Tutankhamun's mask, also known as the Funerary mask of Tutankhamun, is the death mask of the Ancient Egyptian king Tutankhamun (reigned 1332 to 1323 BC) discovered by Howard Carter in 1922 in tomb KV62, and now housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
The mask is one of the most well known works of art in the world. According to Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves, it is "not only the quintessential image from Tutankhamun’s tomb, it is perhaps the best-known object from ancient Egypt itself".
Research by Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves since 2001 has suggested that the mask may have originally been intended for Queen Neferneferuaten since her royal name in a cartouche, Ankhkheperure, was found partly erased, on Tutankhamun's funerary mask.〔James Seidel, (Tutankhamun’s mask: Evidence of an erased name points to the fate of heretic queen Nefertiti ), November 26, 2015, News Corp〕〔(Tutankhamun: Great golden face mask was actually made for his mother Nefertiti, research reveals ), The Independent, 27 November, 2015〕〔(Tutankhamun unmasked? ), Al Ahram, 19 November, 2015〕
==Description==

The mask is 54 cm tall, 39.3 cm wide and 49 cm deep. The mask is primarily fashioned from high carat gold, varying from 0.15-0.30 cm in thickness, and weighing 10.23 kg. X-ray crystallography has confirmed that the mask contains two different alloys of gold, face and neck in a lighter 18.4 carat shade compared the to 22.5 carat for the rest of the mask.
The sculpture of the face represents the pharoah’s standard image, and the same image was found by excavators elsewhere in the tomb, in particular in the guardian statues.
It contains inlays of both glassy material and gemstones, including lapis lazuli (the eye surrounds and eyebrows), carnelian, quartz (the eyes), obsidian, turquoise, amazonite, faience and other stones (as inlays of the broad collar).〔〔Alessandro Bongioanni & Maria Croce (ed.), The Treasures of Ancient Egypt: From the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Universe Publishing, a division of Ruzzoli Publications Inc., 2003. p.310〕
